THIS IS UNITECR

The Focal Point for Refractories Advancement

In 1987, Tokyo marked the starting point of UNITECR, the Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories. Since then, this event has seen a remarkable evolution, consolidating its reputation as the most influential forum for the international refractories community.

This successful journey has been steered by the UNITECR International Executive Board (IEB), a group of visionary minds composed of representatives from the Founding Member Organizations, Principal Member Organizations, and Lifetime Distinguished Members.

President of UNITECR 2025

As President of UNITECR 2025, it is my pleasure to extend a warm invitation to our friends and colleagues from around the world to join us this October in Cancun. We are on the threshold of an exciting period for the refractories industry, and I am confident UNITECR 2025 will place all our discussions, successes, and breakthroughs firmly in the international spotlight.

During the past months, the response to our call for papers has exceeded expectations. The quality and diversity of these contributions ensure that Cancun will be an unmissable forum for anyone passionate about refractories. ALAFAR is especially proud to host the 19th biennial staging of this prestigious event, which has already drawn significant interest from sponsors and exhibitors alike.

UNITECR 2025 will also be the gathering point for other significant initiatives in our field. The Federation for International Refractory Research & Education will present two specialized short courses, and the World Refractories Association is set to hold its 2025 General Assembly. Cancún will thus become the epicenter for our global community—a place where innovative thinking and best practices converge.

Our industry stands at an important crossroads, fueled by two principal drivers: new techniques and approaches to improve our own manufacturing processes, and the impact that modern refractories have on boosting performance and sustainability in major user industries. Both perspectives lie at the heart of our conference theme, Sustainability Meets Intelligence – Shaping the Future of Refractories. From renewable energy and energy storage to enhanced recycling strategies, we are collectively positioning the refractories sector to thrive in a world increasingly focused on environmental responsibility, offering the full value chain and facilitating an ever more effective circular economy.

The stage is very nearly set; I invite everyone to join us for a memorable experience that will bring together leading experts, cutting-edge research, and a renewed commitment to collaboration. Together, we will chart a bright future for the refractories industry. See you in Cancun!

THEME

Sustainability Meets Intelligence – Shaping the Future of Refractories

UNITECR 2025 has announced its theme for next year’s event: Sustainability Meets Intelligence – Shaping the Future of Refractories.

Our theme aims to draw together all strands of thought that point to a smart revolution for a greener refractories world. It is clear that industry generally promotes and accelerates the development and exploitation of intelligence-based systems, while at the same time recognizing its responsibilities in nurturing a sustainable future.

This is true of the principal sectors of the refractories industry – extraction, processing, manufacture, deployment, maintenance, and recycling – and we aim to stage a wide-ranging conversation, guided by those with a deep knowledge of each facet of the subject.

Close attention to all aspects of promoting sustainability is not only key to moving the refractories industry forward but will bring widespread benefits. New tools and techniques are emerging that will help us achieve our sustainability goals in the decades ahead. Already, it is clear that digitalization, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning – along with associated technologies – can be effectively exploited to enhance and accelerate our efforts across refractories mining, manufacture and use.

There are a whole host of areas where we might expect adoption of these technologies to occur. Predictive algorithms, for instance, may find a place in materials selection, maintenance protocols, wear analysis, or operational optimization. Equally, they can have a direct impact on areas such as thermal efficiencies, pollution abatement, defect detection, safety, and waste reduction, where improvements will have a decisive impact on the sustainability chart.

There’s a strong argument to be made that the refractories industry needs to rapidly assess and adopt advanced intelligence-based tools, to the benefit of both the bottom line and shaping a greener future. UNITECR 2025 aims to provide an unmissable forum for a deep dive into all the possibilities.

We invite everyone with an interest in these topics, from whatever standpoint, to join us in Cancun and to help us push boundaries in a positive and enlightening atmosphere.
