Día de Muertos and La Catrina

A living Mexican tradition

Día de Muertos is a deeply rooted Mexican celebration that honors the memory of departed loved ones. With Indigenous origins and Catholic influences, it is observed on November 2nd. Families create altars decorated with marigolds, candles, traditional food, and meaningful offerings to welcome the spirits back for a brief reunion.

La Catrina, an iconic figure originally created by artist José Guadalupe Posada and later popularized by Diego Rivera, represents an elegant and satirical image of death. Today, she has become a powerful symbol of Día de Muertos, reflecting Mexico’s unique view of death as both respectful and celebratory.

UNITECR 2025 proudly embraces this tradition as part of Mexico’s vibrant cultural heritage.
